Winter storm causes chaos in US Midwest

Winter storm causes chaos in US Midwest”

The National Weather Service said heavy snow is forecast to move into upstate NY and New England by early Saturday, Reuters reported. On the other hand, over the last winters we haven't had a snow at this level.

By dawn Friday, heavy snow is expected to be falling in metro Detroit, with a couple inches on the ground during the morning rush hour.

All public schools in the third biggest USA city of Chicago were closed on Friday as severe winter storm hit the lower Great Lakes region. CPS officials say they anticipate students being back in classrooms Monday.

The U.S. National Weather Service said additional snow accumulations of two to four inches (5-10 cm) are expected in Chicago area till Friday evening. More than 200 flights were cancelled at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan.

FlightAware.com, which tracks airline traffic, said about 1,050 US flights were canceled, with about one in five flights into or out of Chicago and Detroit airports called off, per Reuters.

Court closures were reported in Chicago and Detroit, and driver's licence offices were shut in the Chicago area.

Snow from a winter storm moving across the Great Lakes is leaving roads treacherous, closing schools and cancelling hundreds of flights across the upper Midwest.

Schools were closed in both cities and multiple auto crashes were reported on icy roads.

Slide-offs and crashes also were reported early Friday.

The Winter Storm warning for heavy snow accumulating up to a foot, possibly more in spots over Chicago area counties along and north of Interstate-80 has been moved up to noon CST Friday. Kurt Kotenberg, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, told the Register that most of the snow fall in the morning hours fell along Highway 20.

Winter storm warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for parts of northwest OH, southern Lower Michigan, northern IN, northern IL, southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa, where show is expected to be the heaviest. People should stay off the roads if possible, but if they drive they should expect delays and hazardous conditions, she said.

The expectation of up to 12 inches around Chicago prompted officials to close the city's public schools to about 390,000 students on Friday.

Chicago was forecast to receive as much as 14 inches of snow with Detroit expecting up to 9 inches. Numerous school districts in Nebraska and Iowa also canceled or delayed schools Friday because of the snow and frigid temperatures, according to the Associated Press.
