Mirza Basic edges Marius Copil to win maiden ATP crown — ATP Sofia”

The DIEMA XTRA Sofia Open has been a breakthrough tournament for Basic, who scored a surprising victory over Stan Wawrinka in the semi-finals - his first Top 20 win - and only dropped one set en route to the final.

The Swiss believes he needs more time to reach full fitness after going down 7-6 (6), 6-4 to Bosnia's Mirza Basic in his fifth competitive match in seven months.

And it was the Bosnian who prevailed in a three-set battle that lasted two hours and 19 minutes.

"I knew that it would be hard but I think that it was a positive to have three matches in a row, to win two matches".

He said: "I was trying to be positive, trying to fight, knowing that I am not playing my best tennis but still had a chance to win, to make a final". Nothing could separate them in the opening two sets, with one break for each player in both sets, and Mirza made the crucial difference when he broke in the ninth game of the decider, closing the match on own serve a few minutes later for a huge celebration.

"My knee's getting better", he said. "I think I am doing everything possible to get back to what I want to be".

Wawrinka, however, remains cautious about his prospects of a long run.

On the other hand, the Bosnian defended his second serve better and he saved six out of eight break points, stealing rival's serve three times from 10 opportunities to earn the most significant win of his career so far.

"There are a lot of things that you have to put together. It is also about being more relaxed while you play".

Wawrinka will play next week in Rotterdam where he won his last indoor title in 2015.
