Trial of Palestinian teen begins

Trial of Palestinian teen begins”

Ahed's trial in an Israeli military court began on 13 February. The court session was set for 11 March.

Ahed Tamimi, 17, has become an global symbol of Palestinian resistance following her arrest in December past year, which came days after her confrontation with the Israeli soldiers.

Nariman was arrested the day after Ahed and is charged with incitement for livestreaming the video, which later went viral.

Ms Tamimi's mother, Nariman, and cousin, Nour, were also in court on Tuesday. That video was filmed shortly after soldiers shot Mohammed Tamimi, Ahed's 15-year-old cousin, in the head with a rubber-coated bullet, severely wounding him; part of his skull was removed, and he was in a coma for several days.

"They understand that people outside Ofer military court are interested in Ahed's case".

Roughly 300 Palestinian minors are as of now held in Israeli prisons, two of them in regulatory detainment, where no charges are given for their being held, as indicated by Israeli rights amass B'Tselem.

In the court hearing that was held behind closed doors, the judge chose to extend the detention of the 17-year-old girl until March 11 without giving further details. "About the court's decision to remove the media and diplomats from the court room, Bassem told ISM "[The Israelis] don't want to show the world it's just a theatre". It also says her case raises concerns that "Israel's military justice system, which detains hundreds of Palestinian children every year, is incapable of respecting children's rights".

A large crowd of local and global journalists had shown up to cover the trial of Tamimi, who has become something of an icon for Palestinians and supporters of their cause worldwide.

Lasky added that she would make a new request to have the trial opened.

On the eve of the proceedings, already once delayed, Amnesty International called for Ahed's release, saying that keeping her in custody was a violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Israel is a state party.

United Nations human rights experts said Tamimi's continued detention violates worldwide legal standards.

The Israeli military said it had dispatched the soldiers to the Tamimis' home, where Palestinian youths had been throwing stones at troops sent to quell violent protests in the village.

To the south of Bethlehem, forces raided Hebron city's neighborhood of Wadi al-Qadi, where they detained a Palestinian.

Palestinians have flooded social media with praise and support.
