United Kingdom party sacks leader in fallout from racist Markle texts”

UKIP has sacked leader Henry Bolton following the controversy over racist comments made by his girlfriend, leaving the party facing its fifth leadership contest in two years amid speculation about whether it can survive this latest blow.

Former army officer Bolton, 54, became Ukip's fourth leader in a year last September, backed by the party's former leader Nigel Farage to turn the party's fortunes around.

Marney, who was also a UKIP member, was suspended immediately.

In an interview with Sky News, the London MEP said that he believes Islam is a "death cult" and that Muslims should sign a document renouncing parts of the Koran.

"I'm not finished in politics, it's just one of those bumps in the road".

Henry Bolton, who had refused to resign amid mounting pressure from within the party, was sacked following a 63 per cent vote in favour of a no-confidence motion against the leader at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) of the party in Birmingham on Saturday.

The text messages, obtained by United Kingdom newspaper the Mail, also said Ms Markle was a "dumb little commoner" with a "tiny brain".

She said black people were "ugly" and Ms Markle would "taint" the royal family.

Ex-leader Farage, who is still a regular fixture on TV and radio in Britain, continued to back Bolton after the scandal.

UKIP's success was a factor in influencing then-Prime Minister David Cameron to hold the Brexit referendum. But the party has seen its poll ratings slide since and struggled to move out of Mr Farage's shadow since the referendum.

On Sky News's Sunday With Niall Paterson Mr Batten did not rule out running for the party leadership on a permanent basis and insisted it still had a role to play on the national stage by making sure Brexit supporters were not "betrayed". "I think it's going to be hard to unite the party, what we have effectively had is a rejection of a new draft constitution, a re-organisation and indeed a new way of doing politics", said Bolton, who is thought to be considering legal action to challenge the result.

Ian Collins spoke to the new Ukip leader Gerard Batten.

He added: "We have had many crises in Ukip and I think this one was about whether we have a future or not".

"Not all of them - that's not saying that all of them do believe that or do that - I'm saying that a significant minority believe that and they are the problem".
