Trump backs efforts to improve gun checks”

The businessman who once supported tighter gun control - and then opposed it after he became a presidential candidate - is now under pressure to switch back in favor of certain new firearms laws.

This is the fourth mass shooting that President Trump has had to respond to since becoming president, and in the wake of those other shootings, the administration has repeatedly pivoted away from having a conversation on gun control measures and has instead put the focus on mental health. "We are so inspired by the fearless students from Parkland in the wake of this atrocity, and hope that legislators will begin to hear and act upon the voices of our generation".

Bowen, a junior, was at her McLean, Virginia, school when she received a news alert about the shooting in Florida. On Monday, a group of teens called "Teens for Gun Reform" participated in a "lie-in" outside of the White House. But word of the event spread on social media, and it ultimately drew more than a hundred supporters. "Perhaps not all, but we need to do everything we can", he said. "It's frightful and it's devastating and it's not the legacy I want to leave".

"What we need to do is take a real good hard realistic look at what we do need to do", he said. "They are our future, and our hope lies with them".

Instead of attending that dinner past year, which occurred on the same day that thousands of protesters surrounded the White House during a climate march, Trump instead rallied supporters in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. "NRA how many kids did you kill today?"

Following the shooting in Sutherland Springs previous year, the president said, "We have a lot of mental health problems in our country, as do other countries, but this isn't a guns situation".

The president will participate in a pair of listening sessions on school safety this week, and on Monday morning the White House said he supports efforts to improve the federal background check system, something Congress has expressed broad support for without acting on after past shootings.

Jackson Baer, 17, who was among those chanting, said he thinks that the younger generation will be responsible for affecting change.

Kristin Brown, co-president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said the measure Trump discussed with Cornyn would help to enforce existing rules but would not close loopholes permitting loose private sales on the internet and at gun shows. "But change needs to happen".

Cornyn and Murphy introduced their bill to improve federal background checks last November, days after a gunman killed more than two dozen people in a church in Texas. "They would be able to find that out by going through their local records".

Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., who represents the area where last week's shooting took place, told ABC's This Week on Sunday that he's hopeful the activism of the students at Stoneman Douglas will move the debate forward.

For Elodie Camus, a sophomore in Washington, D.C., mass shootings and the lack of government action that follows them have become nearly routine. "More Guns, More Murder", read one of the signs carried by demonstrators.

"If you were just arrested for domestic violence, last week, they wouldn't know that because you haven't been convicted, you haven't been to court on it", he said.
