Cavendish's tests after UAE cycling crash

Cavendish's tests after UAE cycling crash”

Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) has abandoned the Abu Dhabi Tour after he crashed in the neutralised zone on stage 1.

The Dimension Data rider was starting his third race of the season and hoping to add to the victory he picked up at the Dubai Tour at the start of February, but hit the deck before the official start of the 189km opening stage between Madinat Zaya and Adnoc School.

Dimension Data confirmed on Twitter that he had fallen "on the same shoulder he broke last year" after a crash with Peter Sagan on stage four of the Tour de France.

Portugal's Rui Costa begins as the defending champion having won the crucial final stage of the 2017 race on the Jabel Hafeet climb.

Costa's team-mate Fabio Aru from Italy, who is marking his debut season with the team, said, "For sure I'm delighted to start the season with my new team here".

The UAE Team Emirates rider believes the revised route will ensure an interesting race throughout the week. "It's not easy to be the defending champion and, racing on home soil we have many motivated riders like Aru, Kristoff and Ulissi".

"My legs were all right again in Oman after my stage victory in Dubai", Cavendish claimed.

Rowe has not raced since crossing the finishing line on the Champs Elysees in July, when he finished with the slowest time of all those who completed the Tour de France to be presented with the lanterne rouge.

"We have a GC team here, I'll be missing my lead out guys who are injured or sick, but I want to be successful."
"For the Abu Dhabi Tour, we have a very strong team and Julian Alaphilippe for GC", he said.

He said, "I've had an wonderful start to the season in Australia, which continued with winning the Dubai Tour, but I want more". "The world's best sprinters are here".
