Road warrior David Davis says United Kingdom won't have 'Mad Max' Brexit”

The UK aims to lead a "global race to the top" in rights and standards rather than become a "Mad Max" dystopia of deregulation, David Davis said on Tuesday.

Davis is touring European capitals as Britain tries to persuade EU leaders to strike new deals on trade and security with the United Kingdom.

The Tory MP told Austrian business leaders the commitment offered a "clear road" into talks with the other member states, who fear Britain might undercut the European Union in the future to make more money.

Instead, he proposed a system of "mutual recognition" where both sides agree common regulatory outcomes, such as consumer protection or financial stability, but are able to pursue their own policies to reach those goals. Britain must be able to sign trade deals immediately after the split, according to the lawmakers.

Britain is due to break from the European Union after March next year.

"We will continue our track record of meeting high standards after we leave the European Union", David Davis said in Vienna.

That the United Kingdom is free to start negotiating new trade deals with non-EU countries immediately after Brexit in March 2019, and that any "implementation period" doesn't restrict the UK's ability to do so.

His comments are created to allay European politicians' concerns that Britain could cut taxes and regulation to attract global businesses.

The speech by Mr Davis was the latest by a political big hitter as the Government attempts to flesh out what it calls "the road to Brexit", and follows on from Boris Johnson's arcane call to unite around a single vision, and Theresa May outlining the future relationship Britain wants to have with the EU.

Davis said Britain and the European Union could preserve regulatory standards by close cooperation between regulators and the use of an independent arbitration mechanism.

MPs offered "some suggestions" on how a free-trading, global Britain could be achieved - by "taking control of our tariff schedules at the WTO", and ensuring the government can change British laws and rules after Brexit, as opposed to being "a rule taker".

Business leaders, anxious to preserve cross-border supply chains, generally support the plan.

"Minister Bishop encouraged the United Kingdom to use such an FTA as a vehicle to later sign up to the (Trans-Pacific Partnership) 11", the spokeswoman said.
