Screnock, Dallet advance in Supreme Court race

Screnock, Dallet advance in Supreme Court race”

Judge Dallet is running to protect our Wisconsin values under the Constitution and state statute, ensuring equal protection under the law, during a time when our most basic rights are under attack.

Screnock said his win showed that voters agreed with his message that he was committed to upholding the rule of law and not advocating for a political ideology.

"There was a clear contrast here tonight from my candidacy and my two opponents", he said. That support, however, drew criticism from his opponents and liberal-leaning groups who said Screnock would be a "rubber stamp" for Republican lawmakers if elected to the court. In Screnock, they had a particularly attractive candidate: He was twice arrested during anti-abortion protests. He said voters will choose him in April and see Dallet as "an activist judge".

Dallet was by far the most experienced candidate in the race, having served on the bench for a decade after spending 11 years as a prosecutor.

Gary Geller, an 81-year-old retired salesman from Madison, voted for Dallet because she's a judge and a woman.

"I feel woman judges are more compassionate and have better understanding", Geller said.

Tim Burns, who took the unusual approach of running as a Democrat and taking partisan stands on issues, was eliminated. She has spent the past 23 years working in Wisconsin courtrooms - first as a prosecutor and now as judge presiding over nearly 12,000 cases and more than 230 jury trials in a wide range of areas from domestic violence and misdemeanor court, to homicide and drug court, and civil and small claims court. He argued that it's a farce to call Supreme Court races nonpartisan given how much money liberal and conservative interests put into the races. Bernie Sanders' unsuccessful 2016 presidential campaign, and a number of prominent state Democrats including U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan. His campaign was more overtly political than the others and received the least financial support.

Turnout had been expected to be in the single digits even before the storm system was in he forecast. But Burns said he chose to be honest with voters about his views because the public needs to face the reality of the court and its elections are political and its justices are not impartial.
