Trump to announce 'largest ever' North Korea sanctions”

Ivanka Trump has some popularity in Asia, and the perception of her as a smoother player in her father's administration — and, not inconsequentially, a younger one as well — allows the United States a photogenic representative at a games dominated by unusually adept PR moves from North Korea.

Trump is expected to announce the latest measures at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday morning (23 February), with more details set to be revealed later by the Treasury Department.

North Korea has accused United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres of "picking a quarrel" with Pyongyang after he praised global sanctions for putting pressure on the country over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Mr Trump's announcement comes as North Korea conducts what is being seen by Western powers as a charm offensive at the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

On Thursday, Pence used tough rhetoric to describe North Korea in remarks to the CPAC gathering in a Washington suburb.

The two Korean teams walked under one flag in the opening ceremony, which was attended by Kim Jo Yong.

At the conference, Guterres praised the Security Council for succeeding in putting "through sanctions a very meaningful pressure over North Korea", adding: "The pressure in my opinion is absolutely essential to be maintained".

"I say the United States of America doesn't stand with murderous dictatorships, we stand up to murderous dictatorships, and we will keep standing strong until North Korea stops threatening our country, our allies or until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missiles once and for all", Pence told the conservative audience.

The action is the latest US effort to crack down on North Korean evasion of U.N. -mandated restrictions that deprive the pariah nation of revenue and resources for its nuclear and ballistic missile development.

But state officials have described these measures as a means of trying to benefit themselves, USA ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said on Tuesday that "their sources of revenue are drying up".
