1 in 12 subjects in 2018 QS World University Rankings

Universiti Malaya (UM) has made steady improvement among the world's leading universities by having seven of its academic disciplines ranked within the top 50 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018.

Research projects include strength training for physical performance and health, aerial performance in surfing, sprint cycling, eccentric exercise, dehydration in mixed martial arts and the biomechanics of ballet dancers.

Last year, the university signed a 10-year agreement with the West Coast Eagles to develop a high performance centre at the new Lathlain Park training ground.

In a press statement, Trinity's Dean of Research, Prof Linda Doyle, said: "This achievement is a testimony to the excellent globally competitive research our staff carry out, as well as reflecting the quality students that Trinity attracts".

The Subject rankings complement the QS World University rankings which were published previous year and place Manchester at 34 in the world. A total of 1,130 institutions have been ranked across 48 subjects in five subject areas, creating 14,000 published entries.

The rankings also indicate that Taylor's University has Malaysia's highest ranked department, rising eight places to 21st for Hospitality and Leisure Management.

University of Waikato vice-chancellor Professor Neil Quigley said the new subject rankings further reinforce the university's status as one of the top 1.1 per cent of universities, as well as the continuing growth in excellence, research and teaching. "Our graduates and research outputs are effecting real change here and around the world".

"Yet another outstanding result is an accolade for our academics, who are carrying out groundbreaking research".

In the Social Science and Management category, UM reached 45th spot in the rankings from 71st in 2017, while in the Arts and Humanities category, UM is now ranked 65th from 85th in 2017. The university had 33 subjects ranked in total. Nayan Technological University from Singapore termed as the best Asian educational institute with Rank 11 followed by another institute from Singapore, National University of Singapore got the 15th rank in the list.

Physical education was ranked 12th, dentistry 27th, archaeology 28th, anatomy and physiology 29th and development subjects 39th.
