Al-Shabaab kill 5 police officers in attack on two Mandera camps”

At least five police officers have been confirmed dead following a suspected Al Shabaab Friday dawn attack on two camps in the Fino area in Mandera County.

"Four police officers and a reservist have died in the attack", said Eric Oronyi, deputy commissioner for Lafey sub-county in Mandera county.

He said the militants blew up a telecommunications mast to cut off cell phone contact before the attack.

According to security sources, the heavily armed militia numbered about 100.

"Until our officers get to the scene in can't tell what happened there", he said.

Two of the victims suffered broken limbs while the other was shot in the backside even as the attackers burned down several police houses in both camps.

Some police officers who sustained serious injuries during the attack have been airlifted to the capital Nairobi for special treatment.

The area has been facing a series of attacks in the past two months that saw many communication masts destroyed.

The area's communication mast was also destroyed before the attackers escaped towards the nearby border with Somalia. The attacks have occured despite efforts by the Kenyan military to flush out the extremist group by capturing their military bases and killing scores of them.
