Asteroid 2018 DV1 to flyby close to the Earth today (March 2)”

A 23-foot-wide asteroid-which, as Space.com noted, means it is the size of a bus-will come within 70,000 miles of Earth. No, there is nothing unusual happening, no swarm of asteroids striking Earth or about to strike.

It will be travelling at a distance of 113,000km away from civilisation.

The "2018 DV1" will be the 18th known asteroid that from the beginning of the year passes from Earth at a distance less than the Moon's distance and the sixth nearest. It will pass at a distance less than the lunar distance between Earth and the Moon. In fact, one asteroid came nearly three times as close to our planet on January 18 and a pair of celestial wanderers made similar passes on a single day last month.

The Virtual Telescope Project and Tenagra Observatories will show the passing live using the 16-inch robotic telescope available at Arizona's Tenagra Observatories.

An anxiety-worthy asteroid encounter will take place on March 7th, however, when a "potentially hazardous" rock bigger than Buckingham Palace will embark on a similar journey. NASA classifies any object which is 492ft wide and propagates in an orbit within the distance of 4.6 million miles from Earth as "near-Earth" asteroids or NEA and there are over 17,774 NEA.

NASA categorizes asteroids in a few different ways. That size, combined with its flyby distance to Earth, qualifies the object as a "potentially dangerous" asteroid. Magnitude is often a shorthand for how large an asteroid is. This translates into the fact that it won't cause any harm on Earth and even if it plummets, it will surely burn and disintegrate while entering the Earth's Atmosphere. It will be almost 870,000 miles (1.4 million km) from Earth at its closest point during the journey.
