Trump tells lawmakers he will outlaw bump stocks 'quickly'

Trump tells lawmakers he will outlaw bump stocks 'quickly'”

Unless Trump follows through with his demands for stronger background checks and pushes Republicans in Congress to act, a call he repeated Wednesday in a bipartisan meeting with lawmakers, political leaders are in danger of falling out of step with overwhelming popular demand.

"We're meeting with bipartisan members of Congress tomorrow", she continued.

In a statement in April 2013, the NRA said the Manchin-Toomey bill, which would have expanded background checks at gun shows and over internet sales, would "not prevent the next shooting" and would "not solve violent crime". "I really believe I'd run in there even if I didn't have a weapon", Trump said.

The White House is expected to reveal more on the president's plans for school safety later this week.

"Holy s--", one Democratic Senate aide emailed as they watched the meeting unfolding.

"I don't know about the age change". They were testing support Monday for quick consideration of the background checks bill, which was introduced last fall after the shooting of churchgoers in Texas. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and John Cornyn (R-TX), in legislation called "Fix NICS".

Trump rejected the way Republican leaders in Congress have framed the debate, saying the House-backed bill linking a background check measure with a bill to expand gun rights by allowing gun owners to carry concealed weapons across state lines was not the right approach.

Trump also pressed lawmakers to send him "one terrific bill" combining several proposals aimed at reducing gun violence, although that could complicate the legislative outlook for such a contentious issue.

Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida, was skeptical "comprehensive" could work. "I would give very serious thought to it".

"I would say this, we're gonna get it passed", Trump said.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, told Trump that many people may with mental illnesses "are not a danger", and should not be discriminated against.

"Clearly, what we've done hasn't been enough", Rogers said during a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday.

Both provisions appear to be non-starters with Senate Democrats, and Senate Republicans appear open to stripping the concealed carry portion and passing a clean Fix NICS bill.

Pelosi said Thursday that there is sense of urgency on a gun bill that differs from when lawmakers worked on legislation to benefit young immigrants known as "Dreamers".

All of these ideas have drawn objections from either gun-control or gun-rights interest groups, and from key lawmakers in Congress, including some of Trump's guests at the White House. "We should be focusing on making sure that citizens who should not get guns in the first place don't get those guns", House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan told a news conference.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., said the president's decision is counter to the view of the Senate GOP Conference, which has in prior meetings urged Trump from imposing these tariffs. "It's going to hurt the Republican Party".

Graham had been a part of similar on-camera meeting last month, that one dedicated to finding a solution on immigration, another issue on which lawmakers haven't been able to find a deal.

Republicans also offered some strong rebukes to a few of Trump's comments. Business tactics shouldn't beat one's ability to connect with the emotions of the country, yet America elected a president who seems to have business experience as the only tool under his belt. After the meeting, Mr Murphy told reporters: "I'm anxious that this was the beginning and the end of the president's advocacy on this issue".

When the Fox News host noted "we go to war and you vote at 18", Gidley replied: "It's very inconsistent".

He says of gun legislation, "We'd love to do that at some point", and he's "hoping there's a way forward".

Some said they felt reassured - if a little unsettled - by the heavy police presence.
