Disneyland Employees Report Low-Pay Hardships — New Survey”

Crowds walk down Main Street in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland in Anaheim in June 2017. The report found that "Almost three-quarters (73 percent) say that they do not earn enough money for basic expenses every month". Over half of the employees expressed concerns about being evicted from their homes. One in 10 has been homeless and two-thirds can't pay for three meals a day, the report said. The Disneyland employees, known as cast members, cited extra-long commutes, struggles with paying rent and even facing homelessness and an inability to afford basic health care.

Disneyland unions are demanding higher wages after a new survey revealed that many workers at the California theme park are struggling to make ends meet and some have even been homeless while the company's profits soar. "Sometimes I go without food". "I am not asking to get rich by working for Disney, but I am asking for fair pay for fair work".

Another employee, hair and makeup artist Rebekah Pederson, is homeless once again after recently living out of her vehicle for more than three months.

"I have a full-time job that does not allow me to live like a human being".

Another employee said that after 28 years at the park, she is making less than $20 an hour.

The report does "not reflect how the overwhelming majority of our 30,000 cast members feel about the company", she said. The average annual wage paid to full-time, hourly cast members in 2017 was approximately $37,000.

"While we recognize that socio-economic challenges exist for many people living in Southern California, we take pride in our employment experience", Brown told the Register.

More than 85 percent of unionized workers at Disneyland earn less than $15 an hour.

The bleak picture of homelessness and food insecurity, along with stories of employees struggling to get by, serves in stark contrast to the resort's prosperity.

The Walt Disney Co on Tuesday announced a 2 billion euro (US$2.5 billion) expansion of its Paris amusement park which would add a new Star Wars-themed zone to the huge site.

With Disney owning some of the biggest franchises in cinema, it was inevitable that the company would want to incorporate them into its theme park business. Two massive Star Wars parks have been under construction in the U.S. for several years, and it has now been announced that Disneyland Paris will undergo a $2.5 billion expansion to incorporate areas based on Star Wars, Marvel, and the animated hit Frozen.
