Ice warning extended into Sunday as cold snap continues

Ice warning extended into Sunday as cold snap continues”

A YELLOW warning for ice has been issued for Cumbria and the entire North West region until 11am tomorrow.

By tonight, it is expected to stay cloudy with patchy rain or drizzle and light snow over higher ground with mist and fog and temperatures of about three degrees centigrade.

After the coldest start to March on record, which left hundreds stranded on the roads and disruption across the UK's travel network, some places are likely to see an easing of the extreme conditions this weekend.

A Met Office spokesman said: "A combination of low temperature and surfaces being wet from rain, sleet or snow and a partial thaw of lying snow will lead to icy stretches affecting untreated surfaces. You must avoid unsafe areas and follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities".

Forecaster Craig Snell warned the freezing conditions would grip the United Kingdom for another 48 hours.

Police are urging people not to travel in the red and amber weather warning areas, which together cover much of the country.

"The last time we had the red snow warning was back in 2013 and that was for South Wales - they do not get issued that often".

Amber weather warnings have also been extended across the midlands, with warnings of "heavy snow showers" and power cuts.

Yellow weather warnings remain in place across southern England, Wales and Northern Ireland on Saturday as snow begins to turn to ice, while more snow could be on the way in Scotland.

Plymouth Council said more than 80 schools would remain shut on Thursday along with 50 in Newcastle and 103 across Devon.

Half a metre of snow was measured in two areas - Drumalbin, Lanarkshire, and St Athan in Glamorgan, while strengthening winds caused blizzards and drifting snow in some parts of the country. Edinburgh Airport said most airlines had cancelled flights from the airport until lunchtime.
