Spotify Cracks Down on Hacked Apps”

Over the past several days, Spotify has been alerting users that their access from such hacked apps is being disabled - and it's warning them that their accounts may be shut down if they continue to use such third-party apps, as first reported Monday by piracy-news site TorrentFreak.

Some of Spotify's over 88 million free users are using these modded versions of its software to bypass some of the restrictions that Spotify places on users who are on the free tier.

The company has been sending out emails over the past few days to those with the hacked accounts, saying it has "detected abnormal activity on the app" and disabled the account in question.

It advises users their account is safe, but the offending apps must be uninstalled and the official, undoctored client installed in order to access the music streaming. The company then advises users to "simply uninstall any unauthorized or modified version of Spotify" and download the official app to regain access to their account.

Users of other apps have found that their accounts no longer work in pirated apps, and have been forced to use the regular app - or actually pay for it like normal people.

Free Spotify accounts are limited to the shuffle-only playback option and lack the feature which lets users download songs for offline listening. Fortunately for Spotify, the software hub has removed many of these hacked Spotify modifications, including software called "Dogfood".

If we detect repeated use of unauthorized apps in violation of our terms, we reserve all rights, including suspending or terminating your account.

It's not clear how many of those users are hacking their way into Premium features, but it appears to be enough for Spotify to take action.
