Group of masked, black-clad people dubbed 'The Ungovernables' trash Hamilton”

They were dressed in all black and their faces were covered. They approached the group but had to retreat and call for backup.

Police say the incident began at Durand Park off of Herkimer St.

Police have no concrete leads about who was in a group of vandals to rampaged through Hamilton, Ontario on Saturday night.

Local businesses such as Donut Monster, The Beverly and Bitten are boarded up and owners frightened.

The vandals caused an estimated $100-thousand in damage, overturning recycling bins, hurling rocks at storefronts and overturning cars along a one-kilometre stretch of Locke Street in the Hamilton's Kirkendall neighbourhood.

Hamilton Police believe they have identified the vehicles the mob used to escape Locke street, but are still appealing to the public to contact them with any video or security footage.

Police say the vandals dispersed and took off their clothes and masks. Witnesses say police were on scene but no arrests were made on scene.

The motive behind the attack is unknown.

Hamilton says members of the group carried a banner that read, "We are the ungovernables".

In a release, MPP for Hamilton Centre, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath asked residents to come together and show their support for businesses on Locke Street by marking March 10 as #LoveLockeDay.

Many Hamiltonians showed their support by shopping on Locke Street today. Charges likely to be laid will be related to mischief and unlawful assembly.
