Horrifying Dive Video Shows Ocean Full of Trash

Horrifying Dive Video Shows Ocean Full of Trash”

The footage was shot at a dive site called Manta Point, a cleaning station for the large manta rays on the island of Nusa Penida, about 20 km from Bali.

"The ocean currents brought us in a lovely gift of a slick of jellyfish, plankton, leaves, branches, fronds, sticks, etc".

Rich Horner filmed himself swimming through swathes of plastic rubbish floating in turquoise waters around 15 miles offshore from Denpasar, the Balinese regional capital.

"Plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic cups, plastic sheets, plastic buckets, plastic sachets, plastic straws, plastic baskets, plastic bags, more plastic bags, plastic, plastic", Horner said in a Facebook post about his video which has been viewed more than 790,000 times. It attracts the creatures all year round, but the video shows a single ray in the background.

"Great for the mantas coming in for a clean at the station, but, sadly the plastic is continuing on its journey, off into the Indian Ocean, to slowly break up into smaller and smaller pieces, into microplastics. But not going away", he said.

Horner noted that although most of the labelling on the plastic waste was in Indonesian, it is possible that some of the plastic could have been from other countries in Southeast Asia, travelling for hundreds or thousands of kilometres along the ocean currents. "So these small/tiny pieces of plastic will be eaten even more, entering the food chain, along with the toxins they contain and have absorbed".

Horner said the overuse of plastics, unnecessary packaging and single-use items needs to be reduced or eliminated. Sadly, it seems to be suffering disgusting plastic pollution too.

Indonesia produces about 130,000 tonnes of plastic and solid waste every day, with about half of that reaching landfill sites, according to the Bali-based, Rivers, Oceans, Lakes and Ecology (ROLE) Foundation.

Plastic pollution has been an increasing problem for Indonesia.
