Why the earth is not flat. Neil deGrasse Tyson destroys flat earthers”

In the video, deGrasse Tyson used multiple experiments and examples to prove how people came to know the Earth is round, even before space travel made it possible to observe the Earth from a distance.

In a new video on his StarTalk YouTube channel, Neil deGrasse Tyson took on Flat Earthers - those who believe the Earth is flat - and blamed the conspiracy theory's rise on "free speech" and a "failed educational system".

What is completely extraordinary is the fact that these flat-earthers believe that all other celestial bodies are round except for the earth. A look at Google search trends for "flat Earth" show interest surging since January 2016.

A ship would never go out of sight if the earth's surface was flat. "Too bad, the people who need this the most probably won't see it or believe it". Indeed, flat-Earthers are making their voice known more and more, as recently, they claimed SpaceX's launch of its Falcon Heavy rocket was fake. His view differs from that of astronomer and author Stuart Clark, who told Business Insider UK earlier this year that he believes flat-Earthers are simply being amusing by saying that Earth is flat.

This time, as the flat-earther conspiracy continues to circulate among folks who believe the Moon landing was faked and folks who don't believe in gravity, Tyson released a longer explanation describing ways people can see for themselves how the Earth is round.

"We have video from space of the rotating spherical Earth", said Tyson.

The segment could easily stop there, but Tyson digs deeper into evidence of the Earth's roundness, including shadows it casts during lunar eclipses.

Neil deGrasse Tyson blames the educational system in the USA for the perpetuation of the flat Earth theory because he doesn't think it teaches critical thinking skills.
