Detroit Lions reportedly close to signing veteran running back Frank Gore”

According to National Football League reporter Mike Jones, the Lions and Gore are close to an agreement, as of Wednesday night.

Gore has defied the over-30 age decline for running backs, with over 960 rushing yards in each of the last three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

The five-time Pro Bowl running back will turn 35 before the start of the 2018-19 season.

Gore averaged 9.9 FanDuel points per game last season, with 261 rushes for 961 yards and 3 touchdowns, while adding another 245 yards and 1 touchdown on 29 receptions (38 targets). He had gained at least 1,000 yards in eight of his final nine seasons with the 49ers as well.

Additionally, the Lions' defensive scheme figures to include a 3-4 formation at times, requiring Detroit to keep more linebackers in reserve. Their running game situation has been so bad that they haven't even had a 600-yard rushing in each of the last three years.

Gore proved to have some gas left in the tank and he only needs 76 rushing yards to pass Curtis Martin and take sole possession of the No. 4 spot on the NFL's career rushing yards list.

Frank Gore is not yet ready to call it a career after he was cut by the Indianapolis Colts earlier this offseason. But if they can find that productive back to pair next to him and new head coach Matt Patricia improves the defense as many expect him to do, the Lions might just find another level next season.
