NYSC to 'sanction' corps employers aiding, abetting truancy - DG”

Alhaji Ladan Baba, the Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps, (NYSC) in Kano state, has called on employers of Corps members posted to rural areas to increase the monthly allowances they pay corps members.

Isa said: "This workshop with the employers will provide a better understanding of the NYSC and not just stories based, but on interactions with corps members posted to them".

" To this end, I wish to advise corps employers, particularly those from government establishments to make adequate budgetary providions for the welfare of corps members rather than rejecting them".

He added that these crop of employers have formed the habit of not recruiting for their Organizations, but keep on rotating Corps Members in their labour Force year in Year out for the cheap labours rather than permanent employment.

Mr. Kazaure said this in a keynote address at the 2018 NYSC/Corps Members Employers Workshop held in Uyo on Wednesday.

"In this regard, the scheme will not spare corps employers or other persons found liable in aiding and abetting absenteeism and absconding from service by corps members".

"As long as posting are done without strict compliance with Corps employers request, the challenge of Corps rejection will persist".

In the paper which was titled "role of stakeholders in the challenges of corps administration: rejection, under utilization and evasion of service", the coordinator lamented over the dearth of graduates in areas of specialization such as engineering, technology, medical sciences and ICT blaming it for the slow pace of science and technology development of the country.

"That can drive the country's developmental agenda". What obtains is a glut of graduates in the humanities and the arts which a country striving for technological development like Nigeria barely needs.

The director general urged employers of corps members to mentor and monitor them while in their places of primary assignments.

According to her, the challenge of corps underutilisation, to a large extent, is a function of the level of underdevelopment of the society.

"The Corps employers workshop is not only to appreciate the enduring partnership between the scheme and the employers but to also identify challenges in Corps administration and proffer solutions".

"In addition, management has increased the number of regular inspection of corps members at their places of primary assignment, while ensuring that absentee corps members are duly sanctioned, " he said.

Also speaking the Kaduna State Commissioner for Youths, Sports and Culture Daniel Danauta commended the NYSC for reviving the interactive session with the view of addressing challenges.

They also complained that NYSC management was posting corps members to them that were not within their areas of need, corps members that begged to be rejected and those that lacked discipline.
