UGC Grants 62 Higher Educational Institutions Full Autonomy: Prakash Javadekar

UGC Grants 62 Higher Educational Institutions Full Autonomy: Prakash Javadekar”

Two state universities are Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, and National Law University Odisha, Cuttack.

Both the universities will remain within the ambit of UGC but will have the freedom to start new courses, off campus centres, skill development courses, research parks and any other new academic programmes.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted full autonomy to 62 higher educational institutions, including five central and 21 state universities, which maintained high standards, Human Resource Development minister Prakash Javadekar today said.

The central universities which have been granted autonomy include-Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), University of Hyderabad and the English and Foreign Languages University, Telangana. These, Javadekar said, will be able to prepare their own syllabi, conduct their own examinations and declare the results. Javadekar said that the decision has been taken in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision towards liberalised regulatory regime and empower all institutions which in near future can be self reliant. The NAAC is an organisation that assesses and accredits higher education Institutions in India and is funded by UGC.

The Union government also gave autonomy to eight colleges: Yashwantrao Chavan Institute of Science, Satara; Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering, Kalavakkam; G Narayanamma Institute of Technology Science, Hyderabad; Vivekanand College, Kolhapur; Sri Vasavi Engineering College West Godavari; Bonam Venkata Chalamayya Engineering College, East Godavari; Jai Hind College Basantsing Institute of Science, J T Lalvani College of Commerce, and Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal's Mithibai College of Arts in Mumabi. "What is most unfortunate is that no discussions were held with the stakeholders, teachers, non-teaching staff and students who will be adversely affected by the government's brazen agenda of privatisation of the higher education", it said. "However, the degrees which will be awarded will have the university name along with theirs", he added. Javadekar also said that these autonomous universities will be free to sign academic collaborations with the world's top universities.

Among state universities, Jadavpur University, Savitribai Phule Pune University and Osmania University, Hyderabad are in Category-1 and University of Mysore, Anna University, Chennai, and Punjab University, Chandigarh are in Category-2.

Some of the universities in this category are O P Jindal Global University, Sonipat; Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar; Vellore Institute of Technology; and Manipal Academy of Higher Education.
