Turkish forces neutralise 12 terrorists in Iraq”

The US-led coalition is limiting its military operations against the Islamic State (IS) in eastern Syria as many Kurdish leaders within the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have left the area to battle the Turkish forces in Afrin, the coalition spokesperson revealed on Thursday.

A VOA reporter in northern Syria who was present during the tour said the delegation reassured the local population of US support before meeting with city officials.

On Sunday, Turkish troops and allied Syrian fighters ousted the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia from the city of Afrin in northern Syria after a almost two-month offensive.

She also said that the United States had nothing to announce about the resumption of talks on the issue.

Expanding Turkey's military campaign into the much larger Kurdish-held territory further east, which President Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to do, would risk confrontation between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies who have been at loggerheads over the USA policy in Syria and other issues.

"We said that we would not take a step back from here and Turkey will continue to protect the victims of the Syrian war", the Turkish president said.

The Syrian government has already condemned the Turkish offensive against Afrin as an act of aggression.

Outlawed by Ankara, the PKK has waged a bloody insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984, and Turkey also considers the YPG a terrorist group.

Turkish authorities have described the stretch of northern Syria under Kurdish control as a "terror corridor" on the long southern border.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) said it would pull out its fighters from northwestern Iraq after Turkey threatened cross-border military action.
