Colorado tourists involved in helicopter crash”

The helicopter involved in the incident is a Eurocopter EC120B Colibri operated by Whitsunday Air Service.

Two other passengers were flown back to the Australian mainland to undergo treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Police said they were all known to each other but would not reveal their exact relationship.

"We are providing all appropriate consular assistance".

"As a result of the crash, a female, age 65, and a male, age 79, are deceased", said Inspector Ian Haughton of the Mackay District.

It said the chopper crashed into the water "in the vicinity of Hardy Reef, north-west of Hook Island".

"I understand it was very close to one of the landing pontoons".

The helicopter eventually sank and could not be recovered.

Officials said the pilot involved was an experienced operator, according to the Times.

"Following the tragic incident that occurred yesterday afternoon at the reef, I would like to express my honest condolences to those directly affected by the incident", he said.

Authorities retrieve the bodies from the helicopter crash.

It is unknown when the helicopter will be retrieved.

Fearless onlookers have helped save three people after a helicopter crash in the Whitsundays yesterday that killed two global tourists. The two worldwide tourists have not yet been identified.

One passenger had minor injuries.

None of them are in hospital. Both of the surviving passengers knew the American tourists that were killed, but as of the time of this story, the police have not confirmed how.

The helicopter crashed near a tourist pontoon at Hardy Reef in the Whitsundays. "On this occasion something went wrong and the consequences were tragic", Insp Haughton said.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has confirmed it will be investigating the crash.

The helicopter was 200 metres from Heart Pontoon when it plummeted into the water.

Police vessels have been at the crash site since Wednesday evening. The company suspended operations and is working with authorities to determine the cause of the crash, USA Today said.

Whitsunday Air Services issued a statement following the tragedy, sending their condolences to the victim's families.
