Labour to 'rewrite Brexit legislation' if Parliament rejects final withdrawal deal

Labour to 'rewrite Brexit legislation' if Parliament rejects final withdrawal deal”

Labour's Brexit Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the EU Keir Starmer will add on Monday: "If Parliament rejects the Prime Minister's deal, that can not give licence to her, or the extreme Brexiteers in her party, to allow the United Kingdom to crash out without an agreement".

The measure will be considered as part of the debate on the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill going through Parliament.

In the speech to be given in Birmingham, previewed by Reuters, he will explain how his party aims to amend legislation so the government's hands are tied with no option to walk away from the bloc if they offer the United Kingdom a bad trade deal.

"This does not seem a sensible position for the United Kingdom government to adopt".

Starmer on Sunday said Labour wants to enshrine in legislation what is now only a promise by the government to avoid buildings, customs posts and cameras at the Northern Ireland border. While she's repeatedly said she wants to reach an agreement with the bloc, May maintains that exiting without one is better than accepting a bad deal.

'Resolve the dilemma before March 2019.

Under a transition deal to smooth the changeover, Britain will finally sever links on December 31, 2020.

Sir Keir said negotiations so far with Brussels had not gone as Mrs May planned or voters were promised, and that this year's talks on future relations would be even harder.

"What would that mean for this nation if we were not to leave, if we were to find a transition bound us back in", he will say, according to excerpts provided by his office.

Shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer today said it would be "totally unacceptable" for the government to move ahead if MPs voted against the final deal, arguing that would be tantamount to moving ahead without a deal. "That would be the worst of all possible worlds".

'That is why in the coming days - and working with others in the Lords and the Commons - Labour will ensure that an amendment is tabled to the EU Withdrawal Bill to strengthen the terms of Parliament's meaningful vote'.

However, he will say: 'Labour's preference in that scenario is clear: the Government should go back to the negotiating table and work towards securing a deal that works for Britain'.

"This amendment would provide a safety valve in the Brexit process". A vote in Parliament on the deal is expected around October. "It would bring back control to Parliament". A majority of lawmakers in both houses of Parliament oppose a hard Brexit.

Sir Keir will say Labour's approach to Brexit "will always put jobs and the economy first". It has demanded a meaningful vote.

"The British people will not accept any more manipulation of the referendum result by Labour, and its fifth column of European Union apologists".

"You can't negotiate by amendment after amendment. They must decide once and for all".
