Sask. police to share details on province-wide gun amnesty”

Police do not want people transporting the firearms to police.

The program, which runs from March 29 to April 27, is similar to a gun amnesty offered by the Regina Police Service previous year where Regina police took in 157 firearms over the course of two weeks.

Bourassa said the amnesty isn't in response to any particular event.

Examples of unwanted firearms include guns inherited as part of an estate but are no longer wanted by the surviving relative or rifles brought as souvenirs from the Second World War.

Regina police held a two-week municipal gun amnesty program in 2017.

Police say they will be inspecting firearms to make sure they aren't involved in any ongoing investigations. Instead, officers will be sent to pick them up from people's homes. Improper transportation of firearms presents a safety risk and can result in potential charges.

The Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police (SACP), along with the Ministry of Environment, is set to announce details of a province-wide gun amnesty program Monday.
