Your rubber duck is so dirty it could kill you

Your rubber duck is so dirty it could kill you”

The bacteria found included Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium that is "often implicated in hospital-acquired infections", the authors said in a statement. Scientists said that rubber ducks are teeming with bacteria and fungi because they are not clean at all.

The study by the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, ETH Zurich and the University of IL is described as one of the first in-depth scientific examinations of its kind.

Swiss and American researchers from Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, ETH Zurich and the University of IL looked at five such rubber toys and found that four of them contained bacteria including legionella that can cause serious lung disease called legionnaire's disease. They found the bacteria in four out of the five toys when squeezed that can be harmful to children's health.

The rubber ducks held the bacteria at a strikingly high volume - up to 0.15 square inch - and a variety of bacteria and fungi were found within the ducks. This is the first time that scientists have taken a close look at these bath toys - and it turns out that the toys your children use when getting clean are harboring potentially unsafe pathogens. Bath water has nutrients for microbial growth, they can come from the soap and shampoo being used and from the human body.

Although certain amounts of bacteria can actually help to strengthen a child's immune system, they can lead to eye, ear and intestinal infections. The problem is that the majority of bath toys are being used by children, and children tend to be more sensitive and vulnerable to disease.

Scientists recommend that the toys be thoroughly cleaned in order to avoid exposure to these infections. As of now the government has not made any recommendations regarding use of better quality polymers for making these toys.

According to the researchers behind the study, anxious parents should either make sure they clean out their children's bathroom toys regularly or simply throw them away completely. There are some bath toys being sold that are advertised as watertight.
