'Super-gonorrhoea' is not the only sexually transmitted infection becoming drug resistant

'Super-gonorrhoea' is not the only sexually transmitted infection becoming drug resistant”

It's the first case of the sexually-transmitted disease that could not be cured with the main antibiotic treatment, a combination of azithromycin and ceftriaxone, according to Public Health England, BBC News reported.

A man in the United Kingdom has caught the world's "worst-ever" case of super-gonorrhoea.

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection commonly contracted by engaging in unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex, or sharing sex toys.

Dr. Teodora Wi, medical officer of human reproduction at World Health Organization, said in a news release past year that the bacteria that cause gonorrhea are highly intelligent, explaining that "every time we use a new class of antibiotics to treat the infection, the bacteria evolve to resist them". A report by the World Health Organization a year ago revealed that gonorrhoea was becoming much harder to treat, with 77 countries reporting resistance to at least one antibiotic. "PHE actively monitors, and acts on, the spread of antibiotic resistance in gonorrhea and potential treatment failures, and has introduced enhanced surveillance to identify and manage resistant strains of infection promptly to help reduce further spread".

Of those infected, about one in 10 heterosexual men and more than three-quarters of women, and gay men, have no easily recognisable symptoms.

But symptoms can include a thick green or yellow discharge from sexual organs, pain when urinating and bleeding between periods.

Analysis of the man's infection suggests one last antibiotic could work.

Untreated infection can lead to infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and can be passed on to a child during pregnancy. He is now being treated and doctors will see if it has been successful next month. Fortunately, according to the Evening Standard, the man's United Kingdom partner has tested negative for the infection, but officials are anxious other partners, if they exist, may test positive.

Doctors have always been warning this could happen.

It's part of the overall global rise in antibiotic resistance, something that the WHO has described as "one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today".

The Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium has progressively developed antibiotic resistance over time, to the point where the WHO now consider it to be a "high priority" pathogen requiring the development of new antibiotics and widespread public health education and prevention efforts.

"We are concerned that the problem will worsen due to the dramatic cuts that have been delivered to the public health budget".
