Hundreds Protest Police Shooting of Brooklyn Man

Hundreds Protest Police Shooting of Brooklyn Man”

Police shot and killed a man holding a pipe in the Crown Heights neighborhood of NY in the late afternoon on Wednesday, April 4.

Police said none of the 911 calls they received reported that Vassell may have been emotionally disturbed, only that people were concerned he was carrying a gun.

Lorna Vassell spoke to hundreds on the corner of Montgomery and Utica Avenue, many holding black lives matter signs.

"They murdered my son and I want justice for him", she said.

Earlier in the day, the state attorney general opened an investigation into the Wednesday shooting, which left 34-year-old Saheed Vassell dead.

Police have identified a man shot and killed by officers in Brooklyn after he was thought to have a gun that turned out to be a metal pipe.

Police said the suspect "took a two-handed shooting stance" and approached the officers. On Thursday, the NYPD released surveillance videos showing the terrifying moments that prompted 911 calls and eventually ended the man's shooting. "We have to stay straight to the facts of this incident today".

Saheed Vassell's father told reporters that his son had previously worked as a welder.

Schneiderman's office is invoking an executive order that gives him the ability to take over cases in which an unarmed civilian is killed by a law enforcement officer, or where there are significant questions as to whether the civilian was armed and risky.

"We're committed to conducting an independent, comprehensive, and fair investigation", Spitalnick said in a statement. Vassell had 23 prior arrests, including a 2003 assault for biting his ex-girlfriend's hand and punching her, a 2005 robbery, and a 1999 gang assault.

"Officers responding only understood, for the best of our knowledge so far, they were dealing with a situation of someone armed who had been aiming that weapon", de Blasio said Thursday. He also had 120 summonses, but it wasn't immediately clear the citations were. After the police shooting, dozens of police cars converged on the area and a crowd of about 200 people gathered around the cordoned-off intersection. The office has the power to investigate police-involved deaths of unarmed people. One officer suffered minor injuries.

"He's mentally ill but don't mess with anybody", resident O'Neil Headley said.
