Party girl who faked cancer jailed for 'despicable' scam

Party girl who faked cancer jailed for 'despicable' scam”

Hanna Dickenson had raised NZ$43,976 since she was 19 by convincing friends and family she had a rare cancer called soft tissue sarcoma.

An Australian woman has been jailed for three months after she scammed thousands of pounds by pretending to have cancer.

She has now pleaded guilty to seven counts of obtaining property by deception.

Court documents reveal Dickenson lied to doctors about having partaken in clinical trials for cancer treatment and having received care at the prestigious Peter McCallum Institute in Melbourne, and the Epworth Hospital as well.

Swan Hill couple Nathan and Rachel Cue took money out of their own mortgage to pay for Hanna's "treatment".

The 24-year-old who is a real estate agent was punished to three months in jail and given a 12-month Community Corrections Order under which she will require to do 150 hours of community work and also undergo treatment for substance abuse and mental health issues.

Ms Lindsay indicated she will appeal the severity of her client's sentence.

"There's been a request for financial assistance in circumstances where it had been purported that Ms Dickenson had very few options left", Mr Starvaggi said.

"People's desire to assist and social trust has been breached".

Ms Gibson was fined more than $400,000 by the Federal Court for profiting off false claims she had brain cancer which had been cured by alternative therapies and nutrition.

The presiding magistrate David Starvaggi said Dickenson's conduct "tears at the very strings of human nature" and described it as "despicable".

Dickenson's scam fell apart when one of her victims researched her Facebook profile and saw endless posts about partying and overseas holidays, and went to police.

After managing to convince her parents she was terminally ill, they rallied together to raise money for her, 7 News reports.

"She hasn't engaged in this behaviour for three years, she's been a model worker ... she's turned her life around, she's proven that". The court also added that Dickenson would lose her job as a property manager for Little Real Estate in Melbourne.
