Microsoft, Facebook, dozens more sign Cybersecurity Tech Accord”

The 34 companies include ABB, Arm, Cisco, Facebook, HP, HPE, Microsoft Corp., Nokia, Oracle, and Trend Micro, and together represent operators of technologies that power the world's internet communication and information infrastructure.

The pledge builds on an idea for a so-called Digital Geneva Convention that Smith rolled out at least year's RSA conference, a proposal to create an worldwide body to protect civilians from state-sponsored hacking.

Microsoft and 33 other technology companies have signed on to the Cybersecurity Tech Accord, a pledge to work together to combat cyberattacks and refrain from assisting governments in launching them. Therefore we - as enterprises that create and operate online technologies - promise to defend and advance its benefits for society.

We believe collective action by local and global companies will help drive significant change and ensure a safer and more secure future.

The companies call the initiative Cybersecurity Tech Accord. Signers also vowed to protect customers from cyberattacks, no matter the hacker's motive, "whether criminal or geopolitical".

The signatories also pledged to "design, develop and deliver products and services that prioritize security, privacy, integrity, and reliability, and in turn reduce the likelihood, frequency, exploitability and severity of vulnerabilities", Smith noted.

The second principle we have endorsed is that we will oppose cyberattacks on innocent citizens and enterprises from anywhere.

The companies will not help governments launch cyberattacks and will protect against tampering or exploitation of their products and services through every stage of technology development, design and distribution.
Securing the world's computer network requires all of us to recognize the need to increase the capability and resilience of the world's computer networks. We will also support civil society, governments and global organizations in their efforts to advance security in cyberspace and build cybersecurity capacity in developed and emerging economies alike.

And last, we will partner with each other and with like-minded groups to enhance cybersecurity. These tenets commit the companies to providing stronger defenses against cyberattacks while also helping to "empower" developers, customers, and businesses to protect themselves. Lastly, the companies pledge to act collectively to improve technical collaboration, share threats, and more. "This tech sector accord will help us take a principled path toward more effective steps to work together and defend customers around the world", he said. The Tech Accord remains open to consideration of new private-sector signatories, large or small and regardless of sector, that are trusted, have high cybersecurity standards and will adhere unreservedly to the accord's principles.
