LA Fitness Fires Multiple Employees After Two Black Men Were Racially Profiled

LA Fitness Fires Multiple Employees After Two Black Men Were Racially Profiled”

On April 16, Tshyrad Oates began recording on Facebook Live after he and his friend were being harassed by employees.

The first video shows Oates' friend fuming as he walks from the main gym area toward the lobby after he's been asked to leave the gym because he didn't pay an entrance fee - despite the fact that he's a paid member.

Oates' friend retrieved his membership card from his bag and scanned it at the front desk, proving that he was an active member. In the video, the employee scans the friend's gym tag, and his membership pops up on the screen - just as the men had communicated.

L.A. Fitness has fired a manager and two employees at a New Jersey gym where two Black men were escorted out by officers Monday night after a dispute over one of the men's gym membership.

A black member of an LA Fitness gym in Secaucus, New Jersey, was racially-profiled while simply trying to work out. When he refuses to stop, the manager tries to implore police officers in the lobby to make him stop, but they tell him they can't legally do that. Oates said that they tried to explain to the employee that they had a guest pass and a gym membership.

However, they were approached by police 10 minutes later and the White staff members asked them to leave. "This is ridiculous and the last video sealed the deal".

In another video, a man, seemingly a gym employee, insisted that no filming was allowed on premises as the videographer recorded his conversations with the police and other employees.

"But it's not criminal activity", the officer added.

NJ.com contacted the Secaucus location and was told by a worker who answered the phone that the manager who appeared in the video and two other workers had been "removed from the company".

Jill Greuling, executive vice president of operations, didn't say whether the three had been terminated.

The incident took place in the wake of an incident at a Starbucks in Philadelphia after store employees called police on two black men employees said were sitting at a table without ordering anything. Clearly, this is a long time member with a current, valid membership. The club said it has apologized to the member and said Oates was not banned.

LA Fitness also announced that it is now "exploring potential training content and opportunities to better train our staff".
