Starbucks CEO calls arrest of black men at store 'reprehensible'”

Starbucks, trying to tamp down a racially charged uproar over the arrest of two black men at one of its stores in Philadelphia, plans to close more than 8,000 USA stores for several hours next month to conduct racial-bias training for its almost 175,000 workers.

Organizers have called for protests to begin at 7 a.m. Monday outside the downtown Starbucks. On Twitter, several black men and women weighed in and opened up about their own anxieties about spending time in public places like Starbucks.

In the wake of protests against Starbucks and news that two black men were arrested at a location in Philadelphia for, well, being black, video surfaced from another Starbucks location in Southern California where similar discriminatory treatment took place.

The protesters entered the store Monday morning and chanted, "Starbucks Coffee is anti-black".

Johnson says he appreciates "the transparency and the spirit with which" Starbucks and the city are "working together". "What happened was wrong, and we will fix it". "Our store manager never intended for these men to be arrested and this should never have escalated as it did". Starbucks said its U.S. company-owned stores and corporate offices will be closed on the afternoon of May 29 for the training, which will eventually be incorporated into the instruction process for all newly hired employees.

The friend arrived as the men were being led out in handcuffs by police. A video of the incident posted on social media has been viewed an estimated 10 million times. Johnson says he wants to apologise personally to the black men arrested at one of his Philadelphia stores, prompting accusations of racism on social media.

Starbucks said Tuesday that the employee who made the call no longer works at the store, but declined to give details. They also demanded the arresting officers be fired, too.

Last month, the company claimed it had achieved 100 per cent pay equity across gender and race for all its United States employees and committed to doing the same for its overseas operations, an initiative publicly backed by equality activist Billie Jean King.

Philadelphia officials have wrapped up a meeting with Starbucks executives to discuss the arrests of two black men who were denied use of a store's bathroom and refused to leave.

Sonata Capital Group Inc decreased its stake in Starbucks Corp (SBUX) by 29.13% based on its latest 2017Q4 regulatory filing with the SEC. "Starbucks is a gateway to mass incarceration in this city for our people".

Johnson said Monday that there are scenarios that warrant a call to police - including threats and other disturbances - but that in this case, "it was completely inappropriate to engage the police".

Starbucks has said it wants to add training for store managers on "unconscious bias".

"Now, there are some scenarios where the police should be called", Johnson said. He said he hopes to meet with the two men in the next couple of days and apologize face to face.

"You have lost your opportunity to have a voice", Malachi said.

"I watched the video, which was hard to watch". Starbucks shares are up 4.2% for the year so far while the S&P 500 index is up 1.2% for the period. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross defended his officers' actions in a statement on Facebook, saying that the officers were called to respond to a trespassing complaint and that they behaved properly and followed procedure.

The men, who have not been identified, were arrested on suspicion of trespassing.

Police haven't released the names of the men who were arrested and later released after the district attorney's office said there was lack of evidence that a crime had been committed.

Police blocked off the portion of 18th Street that runs parallel to the store. And third, to reassure you that Starbucks stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling.

"This is not just a Starbucks issue. This is what systemic white supremacy looks like in action".
