Mark 'Bomber' Thompson arrested, charged with drug trafficking, possession”

The Essendon legend and Geelong premiership coach was arrested earlier today.

A Victoria Police statement confirmed that a 54-year-old Port Melbourne man had been arrested and charged with a number of offences, including two counts of trafficking ecstasy, trafficking methyl amphetamine, possessing ecstasy, possessing LSD and possessing a prescription drug without prescription.

AFL great Mark "Bomber" Thompson is due in the Melbourne Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The charges relate to a search warrant that was executed at a Port Melbourne address on January 5.

He will also face ecstasy and LSD possession charges - and possessing a prescription drug without prescription.

Behind Mr Thompson's locked doors were digital scales, clear resealable bags and Xanax tablets, according to Senior Constable Bourke. They claim the raid turned up more than 839g of MDMA but Thompson was never charged, despite being a "person of interest" in an ongoing investigation.

He played 202 matches for Essendon from 1983 to 1996, winning three premierships in his time as a player.

Thompson was at Essendon when the club's supplements saga came to light in 2013 and later took over as head coach when James Hird was banned by the AFL.

Thompson coached Geelong to two premierships, in 2007 and 2009.

"He was my first ever captain and one of the most respected people I've ever been involved with in football", Lloyd said.
