Peppa Pig Banned From China's Douyin Video Site”

Even amongst young adults the craze seems to be thriving.

Though the ban has not been officially confirmed, the hashtag #PeppaPig has been removed from the Douyin video website, reports The Global Times, adding that searches for the cartoon produce no results.

Peppa Pig has been outlawed from a Chinese lip-synching app, after the cartoon character became a mascot for disaffected youths whose attitudes and outlook the Communist Party considers undesirable. Douyin is also known by its English name, Tik Tok.

Peppa Pig-related content began to disappear from the social network on Monday 30th April.

The porcine juggernaut has been wiped from video sharing site Douyin because of its growing popularity as a counter-cultural icon.

Winnie the Pooh, whose round face and belly was often compared to resembling the appearance of Chinese President Xi Jinping, has been blocked on Weibo past year. It's not clear whether those videos are still on the platform. The document also purported to ban images of men dressing up in drag, nudity, gambling, and violence.

@vinayak_jain/TwitterImages of Winnie the Pooh was also previously banned in China because it was used to criticise Xi Jinping.

Beloved children's cartoon Peppa Pig appears to have fallen victim to censorship in China.

"They are unruly slackers roaming around and the antithesis of the young generation the Party tries to cultivate".

The official reason for the ban is still unclear, but state media suspect it is due to the cartoon's likely connection to the subversive sub-culture created among viewers in China.

In 2017, Chinese media reported that parents were concerned their children were becoming "addicted" to Peppa Pig, noting symptoms that included oinking and jumping into puddles.

Fans of the much-loved show have been posting drawings and tattoos of Peppa, linking the cartoon to gangster rappers and even remaking scenes, according to China Daily.

China has been trying to clamp down on foreign children's books - including cartoons and fairytales - in an attempt to restrict its citizens from adopting foreign ideologies since at least previous year.
