Shapovalov becomes youngest Madrid Open semi-finalist

Shapovalov becomes youngest Madrid Open semi-finalist”

"Mentally it was very hard because I know how tough it is to break her".

Kvitova previously won on the Madrid clay in 2011 and 2015.

Dominic Thiem's victory over Rafael Nadal portends more than the scores in their quarterfinal match.

Zverev, seeded No2 for the second Masters in a row, has shown all the form that took him to his first Masters title in Rome past year: He has yet to drop a set in Madrid, and that after reaching the semis in Monte-Carlo and winning in Munich.

The fifth seed won 6-4 6-2 as he continued with the scintillating form which ended top seed Rafa Nadal's year-long unbeaten run on clay the day before.

Canada's Denis Shapovalov dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to second-seeded Alexander Zverev in semifinal play Saturday at the Madrid Open.

Can Zverev join the Big Four?

He lost out to Nadal on that occasion, but the two men are all square in their six Rome meetings and, taken across the board, Djokovic has won seven of their last eight meetings, including Rome, Monte-Carlo and Roland Garros.

The Briton was appearing in his first Masters 1,000 quarter-final and remains on course to break into the world's top 20 for the first time.

Nadal relinquished his world No.1 position to Roger Federer, who is sitting out the clay court season, but the Spaniard will retain it if he wins the Rome Masters next week. But I'm playing quite well.

"It's obviously a great final for kind of the future ahead", Zverev said of the meeting with Thiem.

Coming off a successful title defence in Munich last week, Zverev has faced just one break point all week.

Edmund, 23, saved a match point in the second set but Shapovalov came through the decider after clinching an early break of serve on the Madrid clay. "So is he. Hopefully it will be another entertaining one", Zverev said of Sunday's final. Thiem is 3-0 against Zverev on clay court.

Last year's finalist has gradually improved on clay in the last two years and has to be considered among the favourites for this year's French Open, based on his improving form. However, he can reclaim it with victory in Rome, where he lost in that quarter-final to previous year. But Thiem managed to get back into contention and won through 2-6 7-6 6-4. 'I was keeping my level up from yesterday, so that was a great thing.

"It gave me a huge boost of confidence", Thiem said. Yeah, nearly everything worked out.

"I think it has just been a match where he was better than me, same as a few weeks ago I was better than him". Another good showing on Sunday would place Thiem alongside Juan Martin del Potro as first-time Masters 1000 titlists in 2018.

Bertens told wtatour.come: "I'm in the final now, and I have a chance tomorrow but it's going to be really, really tough".
