FACT CHECK: Did the Trump administration really 'lose' 1475 migrant children?”

For two weeks we've seen headlines across mainstream media news outlets that the Trump administration is not only inhumanely separating children from their parents at the border, but they've lost approximately 1500 unaccompanied minors in the process.

Quote tweeting the photo, Halsey wrote "I wonder what #SundayMorning is like for the parents of 1500 lost children your father is responsible for".

THE FACTS: The photos, taken by The Associated Press, were from 2014, during the Obama administration, but were presented by liberal activists as if they showed the effects of Trump's immigration policy now.

Over the weekend, Trump called on his followers to "put pressure on the Democrats to end the awful law that separates children from their parents", then added that "we MUST continue building the WALL!"

Immigration advocates maintained that the arguments presented by the Trump administration were inaccurate, and an attempt to justify a policy that is "barbaric".

This is part of the "zero tolerance" immigration policy that Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in early May, though ICE tested it out along the Texas border in October. Subsequently, White House chief of staff John Kelly explicitly described this as a "tough deterrent" to families crossing, though he denied this was heartless, claiming that the children will be put into "foster care or whatever". Is the federal government equipped to handle the new "zero tolerance" policy?

From January 2014 to April 2015, 60 percent of unaccompanied children from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras were released to a parent, about a third were released to other relatives, 8 percent to family friends and less than 1 percent was released to unrelated sponsors, according to a 2018 Government Accountability Office report.

Second, the true nature of Sessions' policy change is getting obscured.

In March and April of this year, there was a seasonal uptick in illegal border crossings, resulting in roughly 38,000 apprehensions of people crossing illegally each of those months.

Parents are now prosecuted immediately and separated from their children while the charges are being processed through the department of Homeland Security.

Miller's assertion that Democrats are "exclusively and solely" blocking changes to the law and court decisions - which Congress can not overrule - is not backed up by evidence.

"If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you and that child will be separated from you as required by law", he said, adding: "If you don't like that, then don't smuggle children over our border". Data reviewed by The New York Times in late April says that almost 700 children, including more than 100 under the age of four, have been separated from people claiming to be their parents.

Congress is on a week-long vacation but a number of Democrats have said they'll introduce legislation to try to stop separation of parents and children caught sneaking into the U.S. It's not yet clear how that legislation would work without creating a loophole smugglers could exploit.

While some claimed the missing children were not separated from the border but arrived alone when the crossed into the United States.

Per the government's long-standing "catch and release" policy concerning non-citizen minors, detained adolescents are released to parents or adult relatives in local USA communities while they wait for an immigration hearing.

This gets at the heart of why the administration's new spin is so absurd. He had said previously that "we have to break up families" at the border because "the Democrats gave us that law". But obviously, it is precisely the fact that such separations are bad that would make it a deterrent in the first place. So any deterrent to that would have to be deliberately very bad.

What do you guys think?

In a series of tweets and public speeches, President Trump has repeatedly tried to defend his administration's controversial actions at the border by painting huge swaths of potential Latin American immigrants as members of the transnational MS-13 gang, frequently characterizing Latinx migrants as "animals" and "not human beings."

As if to emphasize the pettiness of the attack, Westwood remarked that "it's not the first time that Ivanka Trump has been accused of insensitivity on social media".
