New Italian govt vows to create jobs, deport migrants

New Italian govt vows to create jobs, deport migrants”

Italy's president has asked politically inexperienced law professor Giuseppe Conte to be the premier who will head Italy's first populist government.

Talks about a potential coalition between Italy's Five Star Movement (M5S) and Lega collapsed on Sunday when Italy's president Sergio Mattarella vetoed the appointment of eurosceptic Paolo Savona as finance minister.

Immigration is the bugbear of Conte's interior minister, Salvini, the 45-year-old leader of the anti-immigrant, anti-Islam League, who announced Friday he would visit Sicily to see the situation for himself at one of the main landing points for refugees fleeing war, persecution and starvation across North Africa and the Middle East.

Following reassuring words about the Euro from the two populist party leaders, a compromise was reached: Savonna was named instead to head the ministry of European affairs and Giovanni Tria, in favor of the Euro, was named economic minister.

Premier Giuseppe Conte and his newly sworn-in Cabinet had places of honor to view the pomp-filled military parade and Italy's aeronautic acrobatic squad.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister-designate Carlo Cottarelli said possibilities had emerged "for the birth of a political government", and that financial market turmoil and other circumstances, "have caused me to wait for further developments".

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker, however, told Italians they needed to "do more work, less corruption" and stop blaming the EU for their woes.

One of his shows was called "Never Say Italy" and in 2011, he won notoriety for boycotting Italy's 150-year anniversary celebrations, putting his desk outside Milan city hall to show he was working.

Conte's new government would put an end to a stalemate that lasted more than 12 weeks, during which the protracted political instability of the euro-zone's third largest economy rattled financial markets.

Only five days earlier, the leader of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, Luigi Di Maio, was inciting followers to press for Mattarella's impeachment.

But the markets were reassured by the formation of a new government, which came three months after elections resulted in a political stalemate with no single party or alliance winning control of Parliament.

"The good times for illegals is over - get ready to pack your bags", Salvini said at a rally in the country's north later in the day.

That brought League leader Matteo Salvini back to the negotiating table, and after frantic talks in Rome on Thursday the two parties emerged with a new 18-minister Cabinet - featuring Mr Savona in charge of European Union affairs - that was quickly accepted by Mr Mattarella.

A savvy social media user, he has managed to successfully push his agenda online, updating his followers daily with constant updates, live videos, photos and even pictures of what he eats.

The Italian lira was the official currency in Italy until January 1, 1999, when it was replaced by the euro. In Italy, opposition politicians see the new government contract as "dangerous" and "illusionist".
