At least 25 die in 'Volcano of Fire' eruption”

In addition, officials said, there are 46 people injured, majority seriously, more than 1.7 million being hit by the disaster, including 3,271 ordered evacuated and 1,787 in shelters in the departments of Escuintla, Sacatepequez and Chimaltenango since Sunday's eruption.

At least 25 people were killed after the volcano erupted Sunday, spewing a river of lava and plumes of smoke nearly 6 miles into the air, said CONRED, the government agency for disaster reduction.

Hundreds were injured in the eruption, which spewed gas four miles into the sky. "It's a river of lava that overflowed its banks and affected the El Rodeo village", Sergio Cabanas, the general secretary of Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres, said on the radio, according to Reuters.

The head of Guatemala's disaster agency said 33 people have been confirmed killed in the volcano's eruption, and the death toll is expected to rise further.

"We are evacuating and rescuing people and have reports of 20 wounded, six dead and disappeared", said Cabanas.

Rescue operations were suspended due to unsafe conditions and bad weather, said Cecilio Chacaj, a spokesman for the municipal firefighters department.

Other videos from local media showed residents walking barefoot and covered in muddy residue.

The Volcan del Fuego burst into eruption Sunday, hurling ash 14,700 feet (4,500 meters) above sea level and sending flows of pyroclastic materials down its flanks into nearby towns.

An ambulance of the volunteer firefighter unit carries the wounded from the village of El Porvenir after the eruption.

Three bodies lay partially buried in ash-coloured debris from the volcano, which lies about 44 kilometres from Guatemala City.

Rescuers are using heavy machinery and shovels have found the bodies of at least eight more victims since the last death toll was given at 25.

"We follow with worry the eruption of the Fuego volcano in #Guatemala", tweeted Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon, yesterday evening.

"So they had no time (to escape)".

The Institute of Volcanology said the eruption ended after over 16 hours of activity, but warned that it could resume again and recommended precautionary measures be maintained.

President Jimmy Morales has travelled to survey affected areas.

Most countries maintain embassies in Tel Aviv and have balked at moving them until the global legal status of the city has been resolved in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Dense ash blasted out by the volcano shut down Guatemala City's global airport, civil aviation officials said.

Pyroclastic flows are also extremely hot, maintaining temperatures as high as 1300 degrees Fahrenheit, so they can turn snow and ice into hot mud and ignite fires as they travel, the USGS also said.

It's also not safe to be on the fringes of pyroclastic flows, as burns and inhalation of risky gases are still possible, the USGS also said.
