Populist Doug Ford set to win Ontario polls, promises prosperity”

Campaign Life Coalition also committed itself to "realizing some of Ford's leadership campaign promises which included conscience protection legislation for medical practitioners, measures to protect free speech on campus and free votes on private members bills on social issues like parental consent for abortion". "We are reborn and now we have some hope at the provincial level".

Ford is the older brother of the late Rob Ford, whose time as mayor of Toronto ended after he was videotaped smoking crack cocaine.

She predicts that, under a Ford government, Ontario's cap-and-trade carbon pricing agreement with Quebec and California, which produced the world's second biggest carbon market, will soon be dead.

Ford, a businessman with relatively little experience of public office, has promised to cut spending by at least C$6 billion ($4.6 billion) a year by finding efficiencies, but said he would not be able to balance Ontario's budget in his first year in power. He dismissed allegations that he was involved in selling bogus Progressive Conservative party memberships, a candidate was dropped following accusations he was involved in an alleged theft of customer data at a toll highway operator, and Ford was frequently accused of failing to be transparent by dodging calls to release a fully costed platform.

With about one week left in the campaign, the party published a list of promises and their price tags, but didn't indicate how they would pay for them, what size of deficits they would run or for exactly how long.

"There are a lot of conversations that can be had and how do we work with people across party lines to find what is right for Ontarians".

"I think it's important", she said.

But what will those 4 years look like under PC leader Doug Ford? Wynne, 65, stepped down as party leader. "I know Rob is celebrating with us tonight".

The last few days of Ford's campaign were dominated by news of a lawsuit against him from Rob Ford's widow alleging mismanagement of the family business. People waved party signs and embraced while they waited for Ford to arrive.

Liberal heavyweights like Finance Minister Charles Sousa, Labour Minister Kevin Flynn, Environment Minister Chris Ballard, Health Minister Helena Jaczek and Economic Development Minister Stephen Del Duca all went down to defeat.

Just over half - 51 per cent - cast ballots in 2014, a slight uptick from the 48 per cent who did in 2011, which are the two lowest turnout rates in Ontario election history.

They are: Aris Babikian, Scarborough-Agincourt; Will Bouma, Brantford Brant; Rudy Cuzzetto, Mississauga-Lakeshore; Doug Ford, Etobicoke North; Parm Gill, Milton; Randy Hillier, Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston; Robin Martin, Eglinton-Lawrence; Kaleed Rasheed, Mississauga East-Cooksville; Greg Rickford, Kenora-Rainy River; Donna Skelly, Flamborough-Glanbrook; Kinga Surma, Etobicoke Centre and Vijay Thanigasslam, Scarborough-Rouge Park. Jim Bradley, who had held the riding of St. Catharines for the Liberals for 41 years, was also defeated.

New Democrat strategist Kim Wright, who spoke with National Observer in the moments leading up to Horwath's speech, said the NDP's immediate focus in opposition will be on political strategy in the legislature, including possible collaboration with the Liberals and Green Party.

Ontario's debt more than doubled to above C$300 billion ($232 billion) under the Liberals, pushing it to 37 percent of gross domestic product up from about 27 percent when they took power in 2003.

In a scrum with reporters, Horwath said she is "absolutely" going to stay on as leader of the Ontario NDP party.
