'Gaming disorder' now considered a mental health condition

'Gaming disorder' now considered a mental health condition”

On Monday, June 18th, the World Health Organization officially added "Gaming Disorder" to their 11th "Classification of Diseases" listing, and ignited a vast debate among community members in regards to its severity. In addition, ICD is the standard for global reports on the diseases.

Dr Shekhar Saxena, director for the department for mental health from the WHO, told Euronews in a conference call, that video gaming disorder "can be present at any age" but particularly in adolescents and the young. As of right now, it is being reviewed to ensure that their classification of the disorder is correct.

Impaired control over gaming (e.g. onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context). If you are a video game enthusiast or at least know others that love to spend hours playing games you might be interested in the three major diagnostic features or characteristics of gaming disorder.

The AP notes that The American Psychiatric Association still does not label Gaming Disorder as a mental health condition. Recategorizing transgender as a sexual health condition is aimed at cutting stigma and improving quality of care, says the WHO. Among these new classifications is official recognition for "gaming addiction" which covers an unhealthy obsession with playing video games.

This latest version - known as ICD-11 - is completely electronic for the first time, to try to make it more accessible to doctors and other health workers around the world.

The ICD-11 defines gaming disorder as a pattern of gaming behaviour - "digital-gaming" or "video-gaming". There are no drugs and no substances involved, but it's when gaming takes precedence over other normal activities and affects a person's sleep, their diet, their exercise routine and maybe their relationships.

The U.N. health organization announced Monday it added "gaming disorder" to its list of recognized health conditions. They should also watch out for any physical or psychological changes that might be attributed to their gaming behaviour. The evidence for its inclusion remains highly contested and inconclusive. The beef between the industry and the World Health Organization over whether gaming disorder is a legitimate complaint will undoubtedly rumble on. The WHO should consider the mounting evidence put before them before inclusion next year of "gaming disorder" in the final version of ICD-11.
