India celebrates Int'l Yoga Day

India celebrates Int'l Yoga Day”

Ahead of the fourth Yoga Day celebrations on June 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said it makes people better individuals in thought, action, knowledge and devotion.

Modi inaugurated the "YO1 Nature Cure Center" in the Catskills area of NY through a video link on the occasion of 4th International Day of Yoga.

Addressing a large gathering with the British-era Friday building as the backdrop, Mr. Modi said yoga has shown the world the way from "illness to wellness" and enriched lives across the globe.

He also urged Indians to take pride in their heritage.

It is born of an "awareness of the unsatisfactory character of the human condition", says India specialist Tara Michael, author of the book "Yoga" published in France in 1980.

Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Suresh Prabhu, Uma Bharti, Ram Vilas Paswan, Ravi Shankar Prasad participated at different Yoga events at different states.

Free from illness, a path to wellness - that is the path of yoga, he said.

The prime minister described Uttarakhand as a sacred land and said it had been the centre of yoga for ages.

Modern Western references such as the Oxford English Dictionary define yoga as a "spiritual and ascetic discipline" which includes "breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures".

At least 5,000 events big and small took place across India, but the largest was expected to be in Mysore in the south with more than 60,000 taking part, according to organisers.

UNESCO added yoga to its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2016 in recognition of its influence on Indian society, "from health and medicine to education and the arts".

"Yoga has become one of the most powerful unifying forces in the world". Yoga fosters oneness through oneness, it brings oneness in mind, body and soul.

Submarine staff from India's Eastern Naval Command were pictured doing yoga poses, as were soldiers in Secunderabad.

He said, in a world of excess, yoga promises restraint and balance. Modi said India should be proud to be the "guardians of the great practice".
