Johns Hopkins hospital buildings evacuated after possible release of tuberculosis today

Johns Hopkins hospital buildings evacuated after possible release of tuberculosis today”

Authorities said employees on the site do not need to do additional tests as authorities declared no incidence of health risks.

According to the received reports, a small bottle of frozen tuberculosis sample accidentally dropped down and fell to the floor with its lid open.

A statement from the hospital said the bacteria, used primarily for medical research, may have been inadvertently released while in transit. This occurred on a bridge between two research buildings that do not connect to the hospital.

"In fact, we have determined that there is actually no risk, zero risk to anybody involved".

The two buildings remained off limits for several hours, and were reopened after public safety officials and infectious disease experts gave the all-clear, according to the report. "So there is no preventive measure or testing required for anyone in the buildings as a result of this event".

Tuberculosis, also known as TB, is a risky airborne disease which spreads easily via air.

In 2016, 10.4 million people around the world developed TB illness, and there were 1.7 million deaths, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Baltimore City Fire crews are on scene at Johns Hopkins Hospital where there's a hazmat situation after people may have been exposed to tuberculosis after vials were possibly broken. It's possible to be infected with TB without getting ill, in which case it can still be spread. It can cause a hacking cough that lasts for weeks, chest pain, and a tell-tale coughing up of blood familiar to anyone who's watched Moulin Rouge. It can be fatal if it goes untreated.

Over 9,000 tuberculosis cases were reported in the U.S. in the year 2016, as per the latest report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
