People Sickened From Parasite Outbreak Linked to Del Monte Vegetables”

According to the CDC, "Most ill people reported eating pre-packaged Del Monte Fresh Produce vegetable trays containing broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and dill dip".

The CDC first reported the outbreak in mid-June with the cases in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and MI.

People who got illness range from ages 13 to 79 years old.

Osterholm said he suspected the actual number of cases was much higher than the 212 confirmed so far by health officials. "The two cases from MI reportedly purchased the vegetable tray in Wisconsin and therefore MI is not impacted from this outbreak", said the FDA.

The FDA is now investigating the outbreak of cyclosporiasis, related to the Del Monte products. People infected may also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue. Other symptoms may include vomiting, body aches, headache, fever and other flu-like symptoms. Some people who are infected with Cyclospora do not have any symptoms.

As of last week, there had been 212 cases of a parasitic intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis.

More news: IHOB just changed its name back to IHOP. Here's why

When this parasite contaminates food or water and is then ingested, it can cause the intestinal illness. Therefore, it is unlikely that cyclosporiasis is passed directly from one person to another.

Del Monte has now recalled three sizes of their vegetable trays that were sold at Kwik Trip and Kwik Star convenience stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin. Recalls were issued in June for those four states as well as IL and Indiana.

The recalled products were sold in clear, plastic clamshell containers.

The recalled products have a "Best If Enjoyed By" date of June 17, 2018.

The FDA has not yet identified ingredients linked to the outbreak, saying only that each component is under investigation.
