Bankrate Survey: Maryland Among Worst States For Retirement”

The best state in which to retire according to the study is South Dakota. The Mount Rushmore State's weakest ranking was weather, landing at number 38 for that category.

The study ranked NY as the worst state to retire because the state landed in the bottom 10 for cost of living, taxes and healthcare quality. There is not a state income tax and South Dakota is rated the second most tax-friendly state in the country, according to the Tax Foundation, which offers relief for seniors living on a fixed income.

South Dakota was followed by Utah, Idaho, New Hampshire and Florida.

'The unconventional states at the top of the ratings are surprising in and of themselves because they buck the popular notion of what people want when they retire, ' Tepper said. Weather was the only metric to hit the bottom rung of the ranking ladder.
