Little Known Sex Disease 'Could Become Full Blown Superbug'

Little Known Sex Disease 'Could Become Full Blown Superbug'”

The disease can be transmitted through unprotected sex, say doctors.

Experts say a lack of test kits means it is regularly confused with chlamydia and treated with incorrect doses of antibiotics - building up unsafe antibiotic resistance which could see it soon become untreatable.

The British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) has issued NICE-approved draft guidelines for the treatment and diagnosis of MG.

As reported by journalists portal VistaNews, British scientists have found an unusual threat of infection which causes infertility in women. In men, the symptoms include include watery discharge from the penis. According to the study conducted, 'The majority of men and over half of women with MG did not report any STI symptoms in the past month.

But specialists warn this is set to double within 10 years as the infection rapidly becomes untreatable. It is estimated that around 2% of men and women infected with this disease in the UK.

Often, the infection can cause pain or bleeding during sex and burning sensation when urinating. It can also develop a resistance to antibiotics if not treated correctly on time.

Mycoplasma Genitalium (MG) can be easily missed by those who have it, therefore leading to infertility in women.

It has similar symptoms to chlamydia, but it is more resistant to antibiotics. However, advanced tests to diagnose the disease are not available in all clinics in United Kingdom, as a result doctors have to send samples to Public Health England's laboratory to get a diagnostic result.

Speaking about his experience, a person who was infected by the bacterium, told BBC, "I was diagnosed with MG previous year after meeting my new partner".

"We were put on antibiotics for two weeks but had no sexual contact for five, to make sure we were clean".

Most people who carry the MG infection have no symptoms - but are still able to pass it on to others. New studies are continuing to look at some of the increased risks that come with having MG - including preterm birth, spontaneous abortion, cervicitis and PID. I am now certain it has returned and I am awaiting further test results.

"The GUM clinic refused to retest my partner as she hasn't shown any symptoms".

Dr Helen Fifer, consultant microbiologist at Public Health England, welcomed the guidelines, adding: "If you have symptoms of an STI, we recommend you get tested at your local sexual health clinic".

"MG is treated with antibiotics, but as until recently there has been no commercially available test it has often been misdiagnosed as Chlamydia and treated as such", said BASHH spokesperson Paddy Horner, who developed the guidelines.
