Trump lists Russia, EU, China as 'foes' ahead of Putin summit

US President Donald Trump told CBS News that European countries were taking advantage of the US.

Despite the doubts of his top national security advisers, Mr. Trump is keen to withdraw US troops from eastern Syria, where they have been battling the Islamic State.

Trump also said in the interview that he had given no thought to asking Putin to extradite the dozen Russian military intelligence officers indicted this past week in on charges related to the hacking of Democratic targets in the 2016 US presidential election. Trump said he's going into it with "low expectations".

On Friday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced a grand jury indicted 12 Russian military intelligence officers on charges of hacking the computer networks of 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party. Hovering over Helsinki is the specter of the 2016 election interference and the ongoing special counsel investigation into possible collusion between Trump campaign officials and Russian Federation.

"Right now, there's no trust in the relationship and, because of that, problem-solving is practically impossible", Mr Huntsman said.

"I think we have to protect ourselves", Paul said.

In a pre-summit interview with CBS News' "Face the Nation" program aired on Sunday, Trump lumped in the European Union with China and Russian Federation as USA economic adversaries.

The prime minister has revealed that Mr Trump told her to "sue the EU", having already faced suggestions from him that her strategy would "kill" hopes of a US-UK trade deal.

Challenged by the interviewer on this, Mr Trump said the European Union was "very difficult". "But- and this may be wrong - but they had much stronger defenses".

He said: "There's a lot of anger at the fact that Germany is paying Russian Federation billions of dollars".

The comments drew a quick response from Mr Tusk on Twitter.

He is scheduled to meet with Putin on Monday in Helsinki, Finland.

"From an opening words standpoint, the president should speak first and know exactly what he is going to say", Weinberg wrote for Fox News. "And we'll see if something comes of it", he added.

The White House and National Security Council later confirmed the evening conversation after it became public knowledge.

When asked by CBS if he would ask Putin to extradite the Russians to the United States, Trump said he hadn't thought of that idea but that he might.

"This was during the Obama administration". They were doing whatever it was during the Obama administration.

"The DNC should be ashamed of themselves for allowing themselves to be hacked".

"We have always said that we need dialogue with Russian Federation".

In May past year, Mr Trump was accused of revealing classified intelligence when he met Sergey Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, in the Oval Office.

During last week's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, Trump repeatedly criticized members for failing to spend more on defense and openly questioned the alliance's goal. "Two-and-a-half times", Trump said last week in Britain.

He and his wife, Melania, spent the weekend at a golf resort Trump owns in Turnberry.

What are the U.S. hacking allegations?

The Trumps are departing Glasgow Prestwick Airport hours after police charged a man over a stunt in which a paragliding protester flew above the president as he entered Turberry Hotel on Friday night.

Putin and Trump first met during the G20 summit in Germany's Hamburg in July last year and again met for the second time in Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam in November last year.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating United States intelligence findings that Russians conspired to sway the 2016 election in Mr Trump's favour.

Will Russia hand over the 12 intelligence officers indicted for allegedly interfering in the 2016 presidential election?
