Pornanong singing to keep lead of Women's British Open

Pornanong singing to keep lead of Women's British Open”

Hall usually has her boyfriend, Harry Tyrrell, on her bag, but she chose to replace him with her father at Royal Lytham, and the move paid off as she claimed a memorable two-shot win and the title of Women's British Open champion.

Hall took the outright lead for the first time in the tournament after a 20-foot putt for birdie at the 16th hole and went down the last with a three-shot lead after Pornanong, ranked No. 97 and also seeking her first major and LPGA title, missed a two-foot putt to make double-bogey at No. 17.

Georgia Hall became just the third British woman to win the Women's British Open major after Karen Stupples's 2004 and Catriona Matthew's 2009 victories.

Remarkably, his was Hall's first top-flight win as a professional, but with Wayne, the former plasterer who introduced her to the game as a seven year old, as her caddie, she looked like a veteran prevailing at her umpteenth major.

"I first played this tournament in 2012 and, since then, it's become the one that I want to win", said the 2011 US Women's Open victor, who added a second major at the 2017 ANA Inspiration.

"I was so happy with the way I putted, I was rolling it well and I was seeing the lines quite clearly", Hall said. I just had to stay calm.

"I finished third previous year and that experience definitely helped today".

Hall tied for the lead with a 10-foot birdie at the 13th hole, before she and Phatlum both birdied the par-five 15th to remain locked together.

DORSET star Georgia Hall started by competing for Snickers bars at Canford Magna - now she has joined the most prestigious list of winners in golfing history.

Golf-loving Wayne long saw this coming.

Ariya Jutanugarn was also on three-under-par following a 70, and Kim In-kyung, the defending champion, was on the same mark.

"I don't know what it is, but it is more enjoyable and fun the bigger the competition is".

While first-round leader Minjee Lee and encountered problems down the stretch at a rainy Royal Lytham to give up two-shot leads on Friday, Pornanong played a steady hand and put her pink ball in all the right places - explicitly, out of the many bunkers that define the course.

"I don't think it's all sunk in for me".

She now sits in a four-way tie for ninth and six shots adrift of Pornanong, who holds a one-shot advantage of England's Georgia Hall.

Pornanong, a 16-time victor on tours in Thailand, Asia and Europe, admits she has been inspired by the Jutanugarn sisters - Moriya and world number one Ariya - who have boosted women's golf in her home country.

Hall was not at her best on Saturday. It was ultimately a double-bogey at the 71st hole of the championship that ultimately cost her a win on Sunday. "I'm in a good position going into Sunday".

Hall played safe in three-putting from distance in front of Royal Lytham's storied clubhouse and celebrated her first win on the LPGA Tour.
