Panic as 300 injured in Vigo platform collapse”

Several emergency teams attended to the injured, and divers were sent into the sea to check that no-one was trapped beneath the structure.

The stage was right on the seafront of the north-west city of Vigo, Galicia, and was crowded with people watching a rap artist at the O Marisquiño event. "It was a question of five seconds", concert-goer Aitana Alonso told the newspaper. "It broke and we all fell". I tried to get out and couldn't.

"I had people underneath, screaming that I could not get out, I was overwhelmed, I thought I was not going out, I was trying and falling down again".

The wooden boards cracked along a central section, about 40 metres (130 feet) long, and people slid down into the sea below, emergency services said. People landed on top of me.

"There were people underneath me, shouting that they couldn't get out". "There are five hospitalizations, mainly broken bones and some head injuries", the regional health minister, Jesus Vazquez Almuina, told a local radio station.

The popular annual festival features music and urban sports such as skateboarding.

The incident happened as revellers were enjoying the O Marisquino festival in Vigo, northwestern Spain.

Festival organisers said they "profoundly regretted" the accident and stressed in a statement that the concerts they put on "met the security requirements required by law".
