U.S. strike 'kills Islamic State commander in Afghanistan'”

The leader of the Islamic State's branch in Afghanistan, Abu Sayed, was killed by an American drone strike this week, the Pentagon said on Friday.

A U.S. strike over the weekend killed a senior Islamic State commander in eastern Afghanistan, Afghan and USA officials said Monday.

According to Reuters, 10 other members of ISIS-K (Islamic State Khorasan) were also killed in the coordinated air and ground operation.

"The emir of Daesh in Afghanistan - along with 10 others - was killed", it said, using the armed group's Arabic acronym.

Erhabi was the fourth ISIL leader killed in Afghanistan since the group emerged there in early 2015.

The provincial governor's spokesman Attaullah Khogyani confirmed Erhabi's death.

Coalition forces also destroyed a large cache of weapons and ammunition in raids on two Islamic State hideouts.

USA officials did not confirm his death but said they had conducted a strike in the area targeting "a senior leader of a designated terrorist organisation". Orakzai was responsible for the recent increase in bombings across Afghanistan.

The statement further added "We note that this is happening in the direct vicinity of Central Asia states' borders and many ISIS militants in Afghanistan hail from these countries".

Last week, the group claimed responsibility for the rocket attack against the Presidential Palace and also for the deadly suicide bombing against the Mawoud Academy recently - killing more than 50 students, all under the age of 20.

Prior to the attack, 150 ISIS fighters surrendered to Afghan security forces in the northwestern province of Jawzjan, where the group is fighting for control of smuggling routes into neighboring Turkmenistan. Estimates of ISIL's numbers in the country run as high as 2,000.

President Ashraf Ghani has offered a conditional three-month ceasefire to the Taliban, although the militant group are yet to respond to the offer.
